Ode to my single-girl apartment

About

An American (half-French!) pre-med girl moves to Italy “for a year” in 2008 at age 22… and is still there, currently working as a teacher and translator instead. Straniera means “foreigner” in Italian, and aside from just being highly enjoyable to pronounce (try it!), I think it fits well with the feeling of — sometimes subtle and sometimes glaring — foreignness that comes of living in a place that’s not where you grew up… or even working in a career that’s not the one you grew up identifying with. I think I’ve set up my life now so that I’ll always be at least a little bit straniera, but I also like building a sense of home around me, no matter where I am. Join me in this repository for everyday memories as I search for the balance between straniera-ness and home, and store up the happy moments (and the trickier ones) of this lovely life I get to live.
